About Us

Byangee-Walls-from-The-Cast.jpgThe Sydney Bush Walkers, known as SBW, are a large Sydney-based bushwalking club of around 750 members. Established in 1927, we run day, overnight and multi-day walks mainly around the Sydney region but also across Australia and overseas.

We are privlidged to have a rich bushwalking history, some of which can be ready about here.

Our walks vary in the level of challenge offered and fitness required, though compared to many bushwalking clubs they tend to be towards the harder end of the scale for novices to bushwalking.

Members receive the club walks program each quarter - before the start of summer, autumn, winter and spring. Each program offers a choice of approximately one hundred different activities with the majority of day and overnight walks occurring on the weekends.

The walks on the program are all put on by volunteer leaders. They usually go to areas that the leaders are passionate about themselves, and want to share with others.

See What we do for more information about SBW's activities, or the current constitution for our objects and details on the governance of the club.

The club members come from all walks of life with women and men represented equally (close to 50-50). Our members range in ages from 20 to 80+ with the following broad split:

  • 30% of our members are under 40
  • 50% of our members are between 40 to 60
  • 20% of our members are 60+

We hold monthly social nights, which involve talks, videos and slide shows at our club premises, the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre.

SBW also owns its own property, Coolana. This is a 60 hectare river front wildlife refuge in the Kangaroo Valley, in the Southern Highlands, just over 2 hours' drive from Sydney. Club members are welcome to use this for camping at any time.

We are a ‘not for profit’ organisation, managed by volunteers for the benefit of our members and affiliated with Bushwalking NSW. We offer a structured approach to promoting outdoor activities and learning outdoor skills such as navigation, abseiling and first aid.
