How to Join

Becoming a Member

The minimum age to join is 18-years-old. When you join as a new member, it will be for a 'prospective' period of 1 year, and you will be deemed a Prospective Member. The cost is only $55 per person for the full 12 months; this includes a quarterly activity program and our regular magazine, The Sydney Bushwalker.

A walker wading through a stream to get to the lunch point in BundanoonOnce you join, you can get started straight away as there are a selection of walks and activities being held each week, especially on the weekends. You'll be provided with the program so you can check out what's available and also plan for your upcoming trips. All you need to do is email or contact the listed trip leader in the program and request to join. Some trips reach capacity quickly, so it's always best to book in early.

However, before you get started, you will need to have the appropriate gear. You can get an idea of what sort of gear you will need from the Gear for Walks page. Depending on the walk location or activity you join, there may also be some additional or special gear that you will need. It's always best to ask the trip leader for some guidance, especially when you start off.

As a Prospective Member, the first 12 months provides an opportunity for you to get to know if bushwalking SBW style fits with your expectations. Of course, we hope it does and we will do all we can to help you in our community. You will need to complete a few qualifying walks (marked as 'Q' on the program) in your first year before you can become a Full Member.

We recognise that people have very busy lifestyles, so 12 months should enable you to comfortably complete the necessary qualifying walks as well as undertake a range of other relaxing activities. Getting away from it all is great therapy!

New Members' Info Nights

"Sydney Bushies” are an enthusiastic lot who like to welcome new members to share in the experience of discovering the delights, challenges and camaraderie of walking in the bush.

Whether you have extensive bushwalking experience or have never stepped off the pavement, we invite you to attend one of our regular New Members evenings. Here you will learn more about our activities and we can get to know you.

These evenings are held at the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre, 16-18 Fitzroy Street Kirribilli (only 5 minutes from Milsons Point Railway Station) from 8 - 9.30 pm on the second Wednesday of each month, excluding January. Click this link to view more information about Where We Meet.
